How to calculate fence materials

  1. Measure the total length of the fence line in feet.
  2. Divide by your post spacing (8 ft is standard) to get the number of sections.
  3. The number of posts is sections plus one, since a straight run needs a post at both ends.
  4. Add one extra post per gate, and multiply sections by panels-per-section for total panels.

How far apart should fence posts be?

8 feet is the most common spacing for wood and vinyl fences — it balances strength with the number of posts. Some heavy-duty or windy installations use 6 ft for extra stability. Pre-built panels are usually 6 or 8 ft wide, so match your spacing to the panel width you buy.

Frequently asked questions

How many posts for a 100 ft fence?

At 8 ft spacing, a 100 ft fence has about 13 sections, so you need around 14 posts for a straight run, plus one extra per gate.

Does this account for corners?

This estimates a straight run. Each corner adds a post, so add one post per corner to your total. Corners also need bracing for stability.

What about concrete for the posts?

Most posts are set in concrete. As a rough guide, plan one to two 60 lb bags of concrete per post, depending on post size and hole depth. Use our concrete calculator to estimate the total.
